Unsung Hero: Graham Oastler, The First Smile of Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park
Graham Oastler - Doorman, Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, London
For many guests at Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, London, Graham is the first person they see - and often the one they remember most. As the hotel’s doorman, he doesn’t just open doors; he sets the tone for a memorable stay with a smile and a joke.
Graham approaches every guest with the same warmth and respect, whether it’s royalty, celebrities, or first-time visitors. His aim is to always treat everyone with the same kindness, realising that it's this that people appreciate most - being seen for who they are. He credits the 25 years he spent as a chauffeur with teaching him how to really read people, to anticipate needs, and build rapport, skills that now guide his intuition at the hotel entrance.
It’s not just adults who get the Graham treatment. The hotel’s youngest visitors often draw his warmest attention - he’s always ready with a high five and quick to arrange a small surprise to make their day a little more magical. One time, a young guest told Graham it was his birthday and that he was heading to an Arsenal game. From the concierge desk, Graham called the club and asked them to wish the boy a happy birthday at halftime. “To see the smile on his face when he came back was amazing,” Graham recalls. “He was so happy, and it was great to be a part of that.”
What Graham loves most is the human stories. From sharing a laugh to recognizing someone’s need for quiet, he finds joy in people. “Genuine interest in others is the greatest gift you can give,” - that's his motto.
In his hands, the simple act of opening a door becomes a moment guests remember, the start of a stay that feels personal, warm, and unforgettable.
