When Laurance S. Rockefeller opened his resort here in the 1950s, he deliberately kept buildings below the height of the palm trees, preserved unobstructed ocean access, and kept nature central to the experience. Today, Dorado Beach occupies 50 acres of the former Rockefeller estate, and that philosophy remains part of its identity.

The five-acre Spa Botánico feels almost hidden within the landscape, with treatments taking place amid gardens and shaded treetops. The setting becomes especially romantic after dark. Couples can dine privately in a treehouse surrounded by nature and the calls of Puerto Rico’s coquí frogs, or have dinner overlooking a ficus tree that has stood on the property for more than a century, illuminated by antique lanterns woven through its branches.
Food stays connected to Puerto Rico, too. COA uses seasonal ingredients from local farms and purveyors, centering its cooking around Mi Brasa, a custom wood-burning oven.
Plenty to explore lies beyond the resort, but Dorado’s history and sense of intimacy make staying close equally appealing.
