8 Safest Places to Spend the Holidays

As excited as everyone is to close the 2020 chapter, it’s important to remember that this year gave us some unique opportunities to travel to new places and take advantage of fantastic rates, empty flights, and last-minute availability. This summer has been very successful with domestic trips and as the year comes to a close, we can slowly (and thoughtfully) travel abroad again and celebrate quality time with loved ones.

Here are some of what we deem the safest destinations to spend the Holidays – most are destinations that would already be sold out on any given year. For once, we are the ones talking about last-minute plans!

The Rockies for the skiers

Be it in Colorado, Utah, or Wyoming, we are very excited for the 2020-2021 ski season, especially after a 2019-2020 season that was cut too short. Enjoy breathtaking scenery and fresh air with genuine hospitality or stunning private chalets— whichever you prefer!

Why it is safe: Social distancing comes naturally on the mountains; even if the Après might look a bit different this year, the ski resorts out west are making every effort to keep you safe.

Hawaii for the hikers

The islands of Hawaii are so rich and diverse that you can never get tired of visiting. From sites at Pearl Harbor to hikes along the Napali Coast, activities are endless. Of course, in between days of exploration, the beaches and golf courses await back at your property.

Why it is safe: The state very rapidly took extreme measures in order to contain the spread of the virus and limit its exposure, even from fellow Americans. With strict monitoring, the islands are reopening cautiously.

Ranches for fans of the great outdoors

A true favorite this summer, the old west and its ranches have been more popular than ever without compromising safety or service. However, ranches are not only for summertime, and we love how they transform into winter wonderlands for the holidays. Expect snow, horses, private mountains to ski on, and so much more!

Why it is safe: Vast open spaces with (few) standalone accommodations and countless outdoor activities to limit interactions with other guests. True remoteness!

The Caribbean for the beach lovers

Want shopping and glamour? Head to St Barths. Delicate food? How about Anguilla? In for some adventure? St Lucia it is! And the list goes on. Each island has its own charm and we love them all! Although getting to some of the islands is not a direct flight, they are all worth the trip and feel like paradise over the holidays.

Why it is safe: The islands of the Caribbean have been very proactive in scanning arrivals this spring and shut down their entry points soon enough that they have remained very safe throughout. Now mostly reopened, strict testing ensures the contamination remains at a record low.

Costa Rica for the adventurers

There is never a dull moment in Costa Rica! From the jungles of Arenal to soaring waterfalls, from family-friendly beach resorts to the cutest eco-lodges tucked away in the trees, there is something for everyone. Go for the volcanoes and monkeys, stay for the toucans and surfing!

Why it is safe: The country of Pura Vida continued to put its people first and the country in a bubble long enough to control the virus, before gradually reopening to overseas travelers.

Mexico for the sun cravers

Mexico is one of the easiest international destinations this year. The Caribbean beaches are famous for their turquoise water, while the Pacific beaches (although mostly not swimmable) are beloved for long walks and dramatic sunsets. In-between, a few properties offer an authentic cultural immersion into the pulse of this fascinating country. Learn and relax: not a bad combo.

Why it is safe: As a country relying heavily on tourism, Mexico has been very proactive at keeping guests safe within its luxury resorts.

French Polynesia for the romantics

Yes, French Polynesia for the holidays! We know it is considered the wet season, but it’s one of the mildest wet seasons anywhere. True, there might be showers scattered throughout the day, but the chances of sun, manta rays, and turquoise water are greater!

Why it is safe: These small islands in the South Pacific have taken rapid measures to limit the spread of the virus and have reported very limited cases. The reasonable but efficient entry requirements put in place this summer have helped Gauguin’s treasured islands maintain these low numbers.

East Africa for the pioneers

Traveling to Africa this year is an exclusive experience, one without other tourists or cars around you. Just you and nature. Just you and the animals. Connecting with the land and connecting with conservationists who have been praying for your mindful return in order to safeguard an endangered environment. This year’s Africa is that of the pioneers.

Why it is safe: Far-flung and always sold-out for the holidays, East Africa is in an unprecedented situation where the (small but exquisite) lodges have room for you at the last minute! Plus, the expansive savannahs guarantees you can enjoy your safari without meeting anyone outside your party.
